 O’Bleness Memorial Hospital takes great pride in its long tradition of providing quality maternity services to the women of southeastern Ohio. O’Bleness' roots in maternity care go back to 1921 when the Sheltering Arms Hospital opened as a lying-in hospital for maternity patients in a private home on Clark Street in Athens. Today, in our state-of-the-art Birth Center, we offer that same individualized care.
For your maternity needs, O'Bleness Memorial Hospital's medical staff includes physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. These physicians will care for you during your pregnancy and the delivery of your baby. When you choose a doctor to care for your newborn, you may select from a number of pediatricians on our medical staff or from our family practice physicians who care for babies.
The O’Bleness Birth Center offers you an exceptional way to give birth — in one of four labor/delivery/recovery (LDR) rooms. You can enjoy the convenience, comfort and safety of experiencing all stages of labor and delivery in a private LDR room, followed by care in one of 10 private postpartum rooms.
When you arrive at O’Bleness to deliver your baby, you will be admitted to a private LDR room. A team of nurses and support staff will care for you and your baby throughout your entire stay. We’re confident you’ll be pleased with the home-like atmosphere of your room. Each room resembles a master bedroom filled with cozy furnishings and your own private bath, and it features a bed that easily converts to a birthing bed when you are ready to deliver your baby.
Sometimes things happen a bit differently than anticipated. In those situations, our fully equipped cesarean section room is located within the Birth Center. A well-equipped newborn observation nursery is available in the event your baby requires additional care.
After delivery, you’ll be moved to one of 10 private rooms. Each is decorated with home-like touches including beautiful wooden furnishings. Your baby can stay with you in your room for as long as you like — family bonding begins immediately. You will decide how much time your baby spends with you in your postpartum room. If you need a break, our nursing staff can care for your baby in our newborn nursery. Sleeping accommodations are available in your room for your birthing partner. Extensive visiting hours accommodate family and friends. For those who cannot visit the new arrival at the hospital, O'Baby!, our online nursery, allows family and friends to take a sneak peek at the baby soon after he or she has been discharged from the hospital.
At O’Bleness, we’re committed to making your birth experience as pleasant as possible. That’s why we offer a range of prenatal education classes, including classes for expectant parents and expectant moms who want to breastfeed. While you’re in the hospital, our lactation consultant will teach you about breastfeeding, and your nurse will demonstrate proper infant care in your private room where your entire family can share in the educational process.
