Volunteer Services
Why Volunteer?
Does one or more of these situations describe you?
  • I have a few hours to spare each week and would like to give back to the community.
  • I am a retiree and I want to share my knowledge and experience.
  • I am new to the community and would like to meet people and learn about the area while performing a worthwhile service.
  • I am a student who wants to help others or is interested in a career in healthcare.
If so, we hope you will consider the many rewards of volunteering. As an O'Bleness volunteer, your service will be make a difference to our patients, visitors and staff.

About our Volunteers
Ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens, over 200 in-hospital volunteers serve in 32 areas of the hospital each year.

  • Some community volunteers greet and direct patients and visitors at information desks. Others visit with patients or provide items to patients from the hospitality cart. Volunteers also serve as hosts/hostesses in several areas, provide clerical assistance, staff the gift shop, assist in the emergency department and distribute magazines and brochures throughout the hospital. Many have donated their time for over ten years.
  • College students who volunteer to complete course requirements or to gain experience related directly to healthcare are placed in marketing, public relations, finance, human resources, community health, physical therapy, social services, nutrition services and the emergency department. College students are required to schedule an interview, complete a minimum of 25 hours over the course of the quarter (2-4 hours per week) and attend an orientation scheduled at the beginning of each quarter.
  • A limited number of junior volunteers (16-18 years old) are accepted during the summer months and are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours over the summer. Parental consent forms are required for those under the age of 18. The application deadline for junior volunteers is May 1.

How much time is involved and when would I volunteer?
Volunteers report once a week, the same day and time each week, and are generally scheduled for two to four consecutive hours. Although scheduling varies by assignment, volunteers are needed during daytime and evening hours seven days a week.

How will I know what to do when I begin volunteering?
All volunteers are required to attend an initial orientation and are then scheduled to train for their service specific assignment.

Placement
Whatever your talents, skills or interests, we will strive to find the right volunteer placement for you. Assignments may involve direct patient contact, indirect patient contact or no patient contact. Some assignments do not require computer skills -- all require a friendly, smiling face and the desire to help others. Placement depends upon the volunteer’s interests and skills and the needs of the hospital. Assignments may require serving alongside other volunteers or staff or working independently.
